- Description: The IBM 7206 Model 110 12 GB External 4mm DDS-3 Tape Drive is a stand- alone, SCSI, 4mm streaming tape drive that attaches externally to the RS/6000 family of workstations and servers. Using Digital Audio Tape (DAT), it provides a media capacity of 12 GB (24 GB with 2: 1 compression) data storage per cartridge. It has a sustained data transfer rate of up to 1.1 MB per second (2.2 MB per second with compression). The 7206 Model 110 can be used for program distribution, migration, data interchange, and save and restore of data between disk storage and tape. This model 4mm tape drive provides many benefits. The increased storage capacity up to 24 GB is three times the capacity of the IBM 7206 Model 005. This can reduce the number of tape cartridges needed. The 7206 Model 110 has a higher data rate than the Model 005 and contains a media recognition feature for greater reliability by only allowing data grade tape cartridges to be used for writing data. Thus DDS-3 model also offers improved read-channel performance, improved self-cleaning, energy saving features, and fewer components than the DDS-2 model. It also features a field-proven mechanism that uses an electronic tape path to ensure long life for the head, drum, and key components. The 7206 Model 110 incorporates state-of-the-art DAT technology that uses Digital Data Storage (DDS) tape media. In addition to reading and writing on DDS-3 formatted tape cartridges, the 7206 Model 110 also reads and writes on DDS or DDS-2 tape cartridges. Providing an excellent migration and interchange path from other 4mm tape drives, the 7206 Model 110 is a cost-effective solution for save, restore, and archiving functions.
