Ion Audio TTUSB10 USB Turntable price range: $100.00

The good: The Ion TTUSB10 is a Mac/PC-compatible USB turntable that looks great and works well. The TTUSB10 includes a selectable phono/line RCA output, bundled recording software, and an auxiliary input for recording audio sources beyond the turntable.
The bad: If you're serious about capturing the highest quality digital recording from your vinyl, the Ion TTUSB10's mostly lightweight plastic construction and lack of pitch adjustment just won't cut it. The included software covers basic and advanced recording but leaves out users who fall somewhere in the middle.
The bottom line: If you're looking for an attractive, affordable way to digitize your collection of vinyl recordings, the Ion TTUSB10 is the best-looking budget USB turntable we've seen. Serious audio archivists should invest in a turntable with a beefier construction and more features, however.

Just what I was looking for
by tmccool on January 8, 2009
Pros: Easy operation. Software allows for advanced use. Replacement needles inexpensive.
Cons: Lack of aluminum platter and pitch control.

Summary: I wanted a turntable to convert the vinyl records in my collection that has never been released on CD. I'm not picky about it; I just want to hear those records again. Setting up the turntable took some time to level the unit, put the tonearm together, and balance the tonearm, but that's normal and necessary for a turntable set up. As a pure turntable plugged into a sound system, the tone is great. I'm a little less enamored by the sound of the digital transfer, but I wonder if that is just my inexperience with the included Audacity software. I like the software and found it generally easy to use as I experimented with it, but I'm sure there is more I could learn. Because there is no proprietary software, you are free to purchase your own software if you don't like Audacity. Bottom line: I'm not interested in archiving, just hearing music I haven't heard in a long time. I equate this process with the old way of recording vinyl onto cassette tapes so I could listen to them in my car. Same idea. If that's what you're looking for, this turntable will work for you.

Hardware's OK, but the software ....
by gourken on August 22, 2009
Pros: Easy to use, good stylus, good sound reproduction.
Cons: No cover for the turntable. EZ Vinyl Converter only works sporatically and is frustrating. First, the positioning of the "Next" button is a total pain ... screws up hours of work. Second, the conversion to iTunes only works about 70% of the time.
Summary: Buy it for the hardware, but find some software that works better. EZ Vinyl converter does not make the grade.

where's the ground wire?
by pemmican on January 31, 2010
Pros: Can't really give any pros, since the needle cartridge was damaged and my records unplayable. But it seems like a simple, cheap turntable for people who mostly want to convert LPs to digital; some people may find it useful for that purpose.
Cons: However - if you plug the model I bought - the Ion Profile - into your stereo, you'll notice a shocking absence of a ground wire with the RCA cables; so even before you play a record, you'll notice a LOUD HUM coming from your speakers.
Summary: If you know how to ground a turntable without a ground wire being provided, you might be able to get around the absence of one with the Ion Profile. However, ...
Summary: If you know how to ground a turntable without a ground wire being provided, you might be able to get around the absence of one with the Ion Profile. However, it's kind of shocking that they don't seem to KNOW that it's supposed to be grounded. No mention of grounding in the manual, either - their troubleshooting page is pretty much useless. Perhaps thie absence of a ground isn't a problem if you're using it to convert to digital - as I say, the needle was damaged on mine, so I haven't been able to test it out fully. But if you're planning on ever trying to listen to this when connected to your stereo, whichever Ion model you're buying, if you can, double-check in store to see if there's a ground wire (usually a little clip attached to the RCA cables, which connects to a screw above your input jacks, usually labeled "gnd"). If there isn't, unless you don't mind a very audible electronic hum coming from your speakers, dwarfing the quieter sounds of the records you play (and getting louder if you turn up the volume...), you might want to hold out for a better player.

Summary: For the price the Ion TTUSB10 turntable works fine. You have to set it up like any turntable so i would suggest investing in a quality cartridge. Have not used the Audacity software yet. The EZ vynyl converter 2 software is ok, but their are some bugs in the system. To get your records to ditgital is easy. I installed a Stanton carttridge and the sound is pretty good.

Disregard this review. I was 16 at the time of writing this and had no idea what I was talking about. Replace the stock needle with a Grado black series and adjust the arm, works just fine.
