  Summary: This radio works as advertised as an emergency radio. It has good reception compared to a small, portable weather radio that I have. The other radio receives no weather channels whereas the Midland receives two from my home. You can choose to supress (defeat) certain alerts, so if you don't want an alert when there is an "amber alert" (child abduction) you can disable that alert. The radio is smart enough to not allow you to accidentally disable alerts for important emergencies like tornados. You can also choose to receive alerts only for your county.
  
  The display for my radio is not exactly as shown in the CNET picture. The time is smaller and the readout that shows any warning messages is big. I am nearsighted, so if I don't have my glasses, I have to be within about 18 inches of the radio to read the time. The display is brightly backlight, or you can choose to turn it off. The backlight is very bright, perhaps too bright -- it can sometimes be too bright at night.
  
  The buttons beep whenever you push them. Other reviews complained that if you use this as an alarm clock and your spouse is sleeping, the noise is too loud. It doesn't bother me.
  
  The AM/FM works OK, considering that it is a small radio. You can save a few stations as presets and switch between them quickly. It is cumbersome to scan for new radio stations because you have to press the button for every decimal change in the radio station.
  
  Overall, this is a great investment because of its functionality.

  Awesome radio for atop a desk!

  Pros: everything - great feel, and look, easy-to-read- screen when sitting down on something (like a desk), the weather radio and am/fm reciption is awesome and lots more.

  Cons: nothing at all
