Get Tivo - Avoid this unit

Summary: everything you hear positive about Tivo is true. We have had (do have) several Tivo units and all work great. This unit has known problems with their remote (google humax tivo remote control problem) - and you will find all sorts of notes. Humax acknolwedges the issues and sends replacement units out automatically - but will not offer a refund (save your box for your retail store return). The replacement units (2 and counting) have the exact same issue. Tivo - yes, this unit - no

a DVR/DVD recorder that does it all
by Samhain425 on July 29, 2005
Pros: intuitive interface, easy to program, convenient and takes up as much space as a VCR
Cons: so far I haven't figured out how to use my Xbox on the same TV as the TiVo

Summary: I was tired of using a VCR and countless blank tapes to record my favorite shows and sports teams. With the TiVo I never have to worry about that again and shows I want to keep I can burn on DVD and store easily. Programming which shows to record and burning shows to DVD have never been easier though you can't take commercials out but you can just fast forward past them, no big deal. Definitely a machine to look at if you haven't gotten a TiVo and are thinking about getting one.

Tivo and DVD-R!! Can't beat that combo,

Summary: I'm new to the Tivo world and didn't know what to expect from any system, but I am extremely satisfied with my Humax Tivo/DVD-R. Very easy to setup! Had some problems with initial phone call to setup Tivo, but that was a problem with my VOIP phone company (Vonage). Hooked the Tivo to a plain old analog phone line and things worked perfectly. I've since hooked the Tivo up to my home network and it works great! Hooked up a linksys usb ethernet adapter with zero problems. Burning DVDs is a snap too. Insert the DVD, select the programs that you want burned and that's it!
As a newbie to the Tivo world with nothing to compare the Humax too, I love it! I would recommend it to anyone.2 out of 2 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: We bought this unit less than a year ago and I'm going on my third one. The first unit crashed all the time. The replacement "REFURBISHED" unit does not burn DVD's correctly. I'm not sure I'm up to spending more money to get another unit from Humax that is known to have problems.
If you are out of the first 90 days, Humax wants to charge $50.00 to send you a "refurbished" unit that may or may not work correctly. If you are over 1 year from the original purchase, they want to charge $210.00.
I'm adding the time up that I've spent on the phone with customer no-service and I'm totally wishing I bought a regular Tivo and a seperate DVD burner. -

Summary: Though my first Tivo product, this product is really good. It seems that it sometimes has problems saving shows on DVD ("internal software error", which requires a reboot to fix), and I really wish the hard drive was bigger. However, it performs as advertised. Overall, I'm very happy with this product.

The upgrade software ruins this model
by JimmyTag on February 13, 2006
Pros: DVD BURNER
Cons: THE SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR THE UNIT ACTUALLY CAUSES DAMAGE TO THE UNIT. ONCE IT HAS BEEN LOADED, THE UNIT WILL NOT RESPOND TO THE REMOTE ACCURATELY. IT WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY WHEN TRYING TO LOAD INFO IN.

Summary: I noticed this problem with the remote response once I loaded the update that you need to get from Humax. It makes it so that the unit won't respond as well from the remote. I know for sure that it isn't my remote because I had the problem with the original remote as well as the Logitech Harmony remote that I have. What really convinced me was when I called Humax for technical support and they told me that the problem was actually with the software and that they are currently working on a patch to fix it. This just aggravates me beyond belief. The last thing I wanted to do is buy this thing from Best Buy for like 500.00 and then run into this prob lem. The 2nd problem I have is that I bought a lifetime membership to Tivo for an additional 399.00 and that only lasts with the current unit you have. If you switch units, you void your contract for the lifetime membership. If I could do it over again, I would definitely buy another unit. Now I am just dealing with this remote nonsense saying a prayer that they come up with this so called patch. I do not blame Best Buy at all even though the store manager I had spoken to had no clue about this problem. Do yourself a favor and do not purchase this unit.
