The good: Records video to DVD or VHS; HDMI output up to 1080i; digital and analog tuner for over-the-air TV reception; IR blaster for cable/satellite box control; FireWire input for camcorder dubbing; USB port for digital media playback.
The bad: No S-Video input; ATSC tuner cannot deliver full HDTV resolution; lack of EPG makes timer recordings a hassle; LP mode doesn't compare to Panasonic's; no flexible custom recording speed.
The bottom line: The LG RC797T is a competent DVD/VHS recorder with some attractive extra features, but it doesn't quite stack up to the competition.

Remote and menus really makes dvd recording a snap!
The HD receiver is able to pickup channels other people in my condo units are watching! on channels 101-104. Very odd!
DVD Ram / USB port comes in handy.
After 4 months of use, sound died. Calling the manufacturer was very annoying. They tried to come up with every possible excuse to blame the problem on the cable company before allowing me to send the product back for repairs. Good thing I know my tech stuff so I could get them to fix it. And I still had to pay $69 for labor costs after 3 months.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

These units are garbage!
by nwirwille on September 14, 2010
Pros: East to use
Cons: I have 50 of these units in my high school and I've had 13 go bad just after the year warranty has ended. I average about 1 a month going bad and that's about all they get used most of the time.
Summary: Look at the reviews for this product. I think that speaks for itself. I think someone could probably organize a class action lawsuit because they are truly that bad. I ...

Pros: not a thing. Repacked and gave it back. SEE CONS:
Cons: When I called service they told me to press ( 1 ) for English or this call will end. So I hung up and took the thing back to best buy.

Summary: Had unit for 18 months> Problem w/tuner on timer record- VCR. SEnt to LG-$300 to fix! Said they needed to replace parts that made no sense. Charged $67 inspection fee. More than the cost of the unit and more than the new RC897. Never again an LG product
A unit like this should not fail in 18 months and then cost 140% of original cost to repair. -
Worst Machine EVER!!!
by hoz55 on November 2, 2008
Pros: easy to set-up
Cons: Sound went out after about 5 months. Had to pay 69 dollars to get repaired. Now after 2 more months it died completely. Customer Service is terrible. I don't think I'll invest another 69 dollars into getting it repaired.
Summary: Do not waste your money on this or any other LG electronics. They only care about getting your initial investment, then they do not care about the customer service. Most ...
Summary: Do not waste your money on this or any other LG electronics. They only care about getting your initial investment, then they do not care about the customer service. Most companies give you at least a 1 year warrantee...not LG. Now I have a $279 (plus $69) paperweight.

Not what I expected. Mis-handles un-finished DVDs.
by TechUser60031 on January 2, 2008
Pros: Copies VHS to DVD and vice versa.
Cons: Does not have Automatic Clock. Slow to start, Crashes DVDs

1. Takes toooo long to start up.
2. There is NO AUTO Clock! What contemporary, cable ready, DVR/VCR does not have an Auto Clock?!?!?
3. Editing labels on the DVD is very cumbersome.
4. It Crashes un-Finalized DVDs.
One DVD was filled to capacity prompting an error message, after which there was no recourse. It became completely un-usable, I could not even Finalize the disc.
Another disk was 1/2 used. I was adding short videos on a daily bases. I shut the unit down one night and turned it back on the next day, got some message about "building a menu", after which everything on the disk was lost. You could visually see where 1/2 half of the disk was used but no machine I have, including my PC, could recognize the disk.
Summary: I have created around 20-25 DVDs with this machine but I am at a point where I cannot trust this machine to create a good disk every time (like my Panasonic DMR-E80H).
This machine is not broke (which means it could be fixed) it's just cumbersome to use and not reliable. -
This is a very good recorder.

Summary: I truly do not understand CNET’s review of this recorder. I have own one for a few months now and I have been satisfied with it overall performance. Prior to buying this unit I bought the Panasonic and found it to be inadequate to this system, so I returned it and bought this one. As CNET did state I bought this because I (stupid me) bought a Panasonic 16:9 TV several years ago without the ATSC tuner. Quit frankly I am very disappointed with CNET completely. I started accessing CNET when they started their WEB site and watched their TV Show when I could get it for their reviews, but I am losing confidents in those reviews.
