Summary: If you are buying the Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX please be aware that there are two models with the same name and price listed on the Logitech website. You should pay attention to the P/N. The old model is P/N 961410-0403, and the new model is P/N 961464-0403. This is important to know, because there are substantial differences between them. As of today (8/7/06), the new model is not yet available, but if you compare it with the old one using the website?s comparison tool, there are three features that the old one does not have: intelligent face-tracking, VideoCall, and RightLight technology, and there are also other noticeable differences. Yet they both share the same model, name, and price. If I were you, I would wait for the new version to come out.

This camera is misrepresented

Summary: I was originally attracted to this camera because of it's pricing and the fact that front of the package described it as being USB 2.0. It seemed almost too good to believe that a webcam at such an attractive price had such advanced technology. Indeed it was too good to believe as a bit of investigation proved that the claim was entirely false. Logitech has cleverly used the USB logo that it is entitled to use for a USB 1.1 device and simply placed the text describing it as USB 2.0 underneath the logo. Were it truly a USB 2 camera, they would have used the 'Hi-Speed USB' logo on the packaging.
Since Logitech is a well established company my first thought was that this was simply a typo that was missed when the packaging was reviewed. To confirm this, I made calls to Logitech's Customer Service and their Technical Support departments. To my dismay in both cases I was assured that both the QuickCam Communicate and the QuickCam Chat, that are both low-end webcams that have this USB 2.0 labeling on the package, were indeed USB 2 devices and were capable of USB 2 transfers and performance if they were connected to a USB 2 port on a computer. It was only through a post to Logitech's Discussion forums that I was able to get an answer from the Logitech rep. that clearly stated that Logitech does not make any USB 2 cameras. Needless to say, I'm extremely disappointed that a cornerstone of the PC industry would stoop to such deception on a relatively low-priced product.9 out of 11 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: We own two of the older versions of the STX Communicate webcam. The older version has much clearer and sharp images compared with the new. The new one looks like our five year old $20 (then) Labtec webcam. If you can pick up one of the older versions, it was great. This one is going back to the store.

Summary: This is the best Cam I've ever owned as far as the clarity of picture goes. Its very clear, color perfect, fast. Real time viewing. So far the only down side is I can not get it to work with Yahoo Messenger. And the stand it comes with has to be pulled off to get the optional stand in. The instructions does not clarify to pull. So for quite awhile I was turning it and rereading. Finally I just pulled on the SOB. lol
I gave this cam an 8 would have been a 10 but like I said can't get it to work with Y/M
Oh I almost forgot.... the built in mic was a big plus!!!! Sounds great.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: I paid a mere $50 for this cam which I found at my local Target store, and was incredibly surprised at the clarity of the picture and the ease of mobility! It moves in any and every direction. I used to own a VEO Webcamera, which is now in heaven with the rest of the cheesy webcams I've had, but this one by far is not to be left behind!

Depending on the webcam software used in conjunction with this gizmo, it can get better or worse - mostly worse. I tried CoffeeCup Webcam, webcamXP and activeWebCam; all three are supposed to work with the cam.
Could be OK for run-of-the-mill use - definitely not recommended for anything that is happening outdoors.
Changed to a MS LifeCam VX1000; finally getting the results (together with activeWebCam) that I was looking for: Reliability and a good picture
The kicker?!? The VX1000 was less expensive than the LogiCam! -
