The Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 is a well-rounded Webcam with ample adjustability and a solid software package, making it a good option for users at all levels of expertise.

The good: Clear picture for video and still shots; vibrant colors; "boosts" for different lighting situations; sensitive microphone; headset included.

The bad: Whites are blown out in dim settings; some digital noise in black backgrounds; privacy shield comes off too easily; camera is too easy to remove from stand.

The Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 has a decidedly Webcam 1.0 design, but don't dismiss it as outdated; its performance and adjustability are impressive, especially for its $79.99 price. The QuickCam Pro 5000 offers enough image-setting options for most users. It's also easy to setup, and it works seamlessly with multiple instant-messaging clients. More advanced users may want to consider the Logitech QuickCam Fusion, which offers similar performance but adds a more modern look and the ability to take megapixel photos.

Installing the Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 is a snap; we were up and running in less than five minutes. In addition to MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), and Yahoo Messenger, the installation CD includes drivers and plenty of software: Logitech's QuickCapture app for taking still photos and videos, an application for sending e-mail with video, and Logitech's Desktop Messenger software, which automatically checks for software updates. All of the bundled apps are straightforward and easy to use, though two brief setup guides are included.

Instead of a clip-on stand or a claw, the QuickCam Pro 5000 has a flexible tail that allows it to sit atop a CRT or LCD monitor or a laptop display. You can flatten the tail to prop up the camera on a desk. We saw the same style of tail on the Logitech QuickCam Fusion, but the Pro 5000's is more flexible and holds its shape better.

Despite its large size and bulbous shape, the camera is very adjustable: you can tilt it 45 degrees up, 10 degrees down, and 360 degrees to the side. All of these adjustments must be made by hand, unlike with the Creative Live Motion, which allows you to control the view via software. We don't mind the manual adjustment, however.

Although the QuickCam Pro 5000 is easy to position, we did run into a couple of minor snags. The privacy shield isn't securely affixed to the camera, and it comes off too easily. Also, the camera itself comes off the stand when tilted too far in one direction. In each case, you merely snap the dislodged item back into place.

On top of the Webcam is a large, unlabeled snapshot button, which takes a picture if the QuickCapture software is open. A small, sensitive microphone built into the front of the camera can record a normal-level conversation from 6 feet away. Logitech also includes a headset for better sound recording and voice chat.

The included QuickCam software lets you adjust many settings, including brightness, saturation, contrast, white balance, hue, sharpness, gamma, and backlight. You can also change exposure, gain, and ambient-light settings. With low-light-boost and color-boost settings, Logitech helps you achieve optimal performance under different light conditions. In the less-useful-but-cute department is the Avatars feature, which tracks the movements of your nose, eyebrows, and mouth and applies them to a cartoon character such as an alien or a shark.

The QuickCam Pro 5000 performed well in our tests, but bright whites were blown out, especially in dimly lit environments, even when we employed the low-light boost setting. Digital noise was minimal, but we did notice it in dark areas. Colors were vibrant, rich, and accurate, and using the color-boost feature improved the color quality. Video images were equally clear, with good color, though quickly moving objects (such as a waving hand) were somewhat blurry, even in well-lit conditions.

Video records at a maximum of 30 frames per second at resolutions of 160x120, 320x240, and 640x480. You can capture still images at any of those resolutions and at 1.3 megapixels; however, the latter image size is achieved through interpolation.

The Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 comes with a two-year hardware warranty, which is better than the standard one year for input devices. You can get service and support online or from a toll-free phone number. Logitech's support Web site also offers software updates, driver downloads, and user discussion forums.

If you have a choice, get the Pro 4000

Summary: The image quality is good compared to other web cameras, but it just doesn't compare to the Pro 4000. First of all, although you are getting a true 1.3 MPixel sensor, you aren't going to want to use the webcam for megapixel shots, because you won't get real digital camera quality. The lack of focus adjustment is quite problematic, especially if you want to take shots of drawings, text, and for other applications where macro shots are necessary. I am not even sure why Logitech decided to make the 5000 a "focus-free" camera... a foolish decision. The device doesn't take advantage of USB2.0 xfer speed, nor does it give you 30 fps full-motion video capability (but in some cases, depending on the resolution used, it may come close). It's actually a "USB-2 compatible" device meaning that it's a USB-1 device that will work with USB-2.0 ports (wow, simply incredible). The other things are quite insignificant --For example, the privacy shade falls off too easily. The stand isn't that great and looks ugly. Stay with the pRO-4000. The 4000 has better color reproduction, more accurate color tint, especially in areas with lots of daylight, and the focus adjustment is a real treat... just a better camera imho.

There are a lot of issues that I am not very happy, though:

1. In msn the camera transmits in 320x240, I could not change it to 640 or 1 mg ; you can use this sizes only in quickcapture (to take pictures or video)which is nice BUT THIS IS A WEB VCAMERA SO IT WOULD BE WAY BETTER IF THE DIFFERENT SIZES WORKED ON Msn WHIcH IS THE PURPOSE OF THE CAMERA!
2. the camera has funny avatars and video effects that my kindergarten son loves to play with BUT IT IS EXTREMELY HARD TO KEEP THEM WORKING. They hang up when he moves and you need to constantly calibrate them as they appear and disappear and a lot of times you get a message that it needs more light even tough you have a lot of light and can see a very clear image.
3. the soft hangs up a lot and the quick assistant disappears and the camera gets an "incorrect parameter" error quite often.
4. The lighting is a little unnatural it has a blue tint to it which I could not fix yet. To be fair I must also say that the camera works good in low light and it has a light boost that works nice if you do not want to turn on the light.
5. the face tracking is not good, it zooms in and out really fast on its own constantly. it is very annoying for who you are talking with as they can't really see you well with the sudden movements.

As a summary it is ok and if you consider you get a mic and camara the price is ok but I think logitech needs to come out with patches soon as their soft needs a lot of work.

Summary: This cam was actually cheaper than it's predecessor the 4000 and has more capabilities. it takes 1.3mega pixel pictures which is more than enough for a web cam and it also takes 640:480 it also comes with very easy to use software that runs in the background for quick access. it's compatible with msn messenger, yahoo, and aim. i've actually used this cam for all three programs and it works great. the image quality could have been better but you can't expect too much from a web cam anyway since it's built for compact size to send promptly. has nice private lid that covers over lens.

I recommend people to research other cams before and finding what they really need, maybe they could find something else better without spending as much as i did. good luck!

After returning that one, I got this Logitech camera and it installed in 5 minutes - no problems. The camera works just fine, frame rates are just fine and lighting also seems just fine escpecially considering I use it in a dimly lit room. Face tracking works okay, although the novelty quickly fades and you might find, like me, that it's better to go without it. Overall, for $60-70, it's hard to complain about this webcam. It does the job well enough.

When I decided to upgrade to the 5000, I didn't notice that it only had fixed focus. That's my biggest problem with it. Aside from that, I can't get a good color balance, it's either too red or too green, and I can't adjust the contrast properly - the whites are glowing.

Being 1000 miles away, made support difficult, but I tried several different software versions, from the latest 10.5 to as early as 8.4.8. The 8.x and 9.x versions of software didn't support the latest version of the camera, the 10.x version is buggy and crashes the PC with the BSOD. We ended up returning the camera.

Summary: I bought 2 of these for myself and my sister 1200 miles away so we could chat online. She hooked her's up to an older Compaq winxp pc,mine hooked up to my 2005 Sony Vaio with media center 2005. I had never used a 5.1 speaker setup so had no idea that my soundcard was set up for surround sound. My sister's setup was fine, good sound,video. On my setup, however, there was a static sound whenever either one of us spoke while online. In fact the static would remain even after we stopped our chat and I was just trying to listen to music in my media library. The only way to get rid of the static was to unplug the webcam from the usb port and restart the pc, I guess that reset the soundcard or something. After doing some online research I found that this webcam was incompatible with surround-sound soundcards. I ended up giving the cam to another sister who has had no trouble with it (2003 pc - no surround), while I bought a Philips Pixel Plus webcam as a replacement which has worked fine with my setup.

I have no idea if Logitech has corrected this problem with an update, they hadn't when I gave away the webcam about a year ago, but anyone with a newer pc should proceed with caution to make sure their conversations don't sound like an old Edison wax cylinder recording. Logitech should have fixed this BEFORE they sold the product to the public.

Summary: My Logitech Quickcam has been nothing but trouble ever since I bought it. It interfered with my sound card causing ALL audio on my PC to crackle horribly. Its uninstall wizard crashed mid-way through corrupting my system registry, and it eventually nearly brought my entire system to a halt. This is an extremely unstable product, which interferes with numerous other programs. I have since thrown my Logitech Quickcam in the bin.
