an absolute piece of crap
by tndad on April 4, 2012
Pros: I've had it for months. I consider it a positive development when it records at all. Any kind of picture quality is a bonus.
Cons: Autofocus is terrible. Skype partners ask what's wrong with my camera that it kept going out of focus. I hit record and 25% of the time it records nothing at all! You have to tell it: "Yeah, I really meant for you to record, do it."
Summary: Avoid this model at all costs. Really Microsoft, you should be completely ashamed of yourselves for producing this ridiculously useless piece of equipment. Once you've missed the opportunity to ...

Summary: Avoid this model at all costs. Really Microsoft, you should be completely ashamed of yourselves for producing this ridiculously useless piece of equipment. Once you've missed the opportunity to record they don;t come back. Terrible piece of low quality equipment. Wish I'd spent more money on a better model and another brand than Microsoft.

Can't autofocus. Avoid at all costs.
by dfichtner on April 3, 2011
Pros: Fairly crisp image. Nice colors. Average microphone
Cons: Not the best in low-light, but not awful. My older VX-5000 has a better mic. Can't even make use of the Truecolor software because I must manually turn off the autofocus to make this webcam usable.
Summary: Look elsewhere. This webcam may as well be fixed-focus, as Microsoft never has been able to control the autofocus correctly -- even after numerous updates. They seem to be giving ...

Summary: Look elsewhere. This webcam may as well be fixed-focus, as Microsoft never has been able to control the autofocus correctly -- even after numerous updates. They seem to be giving up, as the HD-6000 is now out, and I believe that is fixed-focus.

Buggy autofocus. Compatible with nothing useful.
by Crankysaint on August 20, 2010
Pros: Nice picture if you disable the autofocus. Decent audio.
Cons: Blurs and refocuses every 10-15 seconds. Does not record audio when used with Webcammax. Incompatible with BlogTV. Cannot choose audio source within the Lifecam appication.
Summary: I picked up the HD-5000 because I needed a good camera for classroom demonstrations and for teaching art on BlogTV. I could have lived with the annoying autofocus problem by ...

Summary: I picked up the HD-5000 because I needed a good camera for classroom demonstrations and for teaching art on BlogTV. I could have lived with the annoying autofocus problem by disabling the autofocus, but there was still the compatibility issue. Webcammax is my primary webcam application. Webcammax couldn't pick up audio from the HD-5000. The HD-5000 also cannot be detected by BlogTV.
I am returning the Lifecam HD-5000 and I am buying the Logitech Pro 9000. Logitech knows webcams. Microsoft knows buggy software.

It is a great webcam, but quality is not HD
by SolidSnakeFan on June 11, 2011
Pros: I think This Webcam is pretty good, although I did have issues with the blurryness, but I was able to fix it by going to the focus and taking it off auto, but the quality is not HD. But it is great for video chatting uses though.
Cons: I do have a hard time keeping it on my moniter, but not much of a drawback though.
Summary: All in all, I think this is a great webcam but could be a little more improved to produce actual HD quality.
