  Don't buy it if you can possibly avoid it

  Pros: Can run 64 bit software; otherwise I have yet to experience any upsides to it.

  Cons: Makes older software, including 32-bit, effectively unusable even in compatibility mode. This operating system can wreck hundreds of dollars worth of software.

  Summary: My experience is that certain older software is totally unusable even in compatibility mode. Corel PhotoPaint, which is part of the Corel Draw suite that cost hundreds of dollars, freezes to the extent that I lose control of my mouse and crashes so frequently that it ruins anything I try to do with it. I rely on this software to create, for example, drawings for technical articles and now it is almost useless thanks to Windows 7. (I say "thanks to Windows 7:" because it ran fine in Windows XP.)
  
  I have yet to see anything Windows 7 can do that XP could not, other than run 64 bit software. Office 2010 will certainly run properly in Windows 7 but I have yet to see anything it can do that the version I bought in 2002 could not do; in fact, the menus are less user-friendly so, if anything, Office 2010 is inferior to the XP-compatible version.
  
  I expected to be delighted with Windows 7 (Home Premium, 64 bit) but it has caused only aggravation. It came with my Dell computer so I didn't have a choice, but the bottom line is that it has generally caused nothing but trouble.

  I also tried to use Windows Live Movie Maker, which came with Windows 7. When I tried to add an image, the screen grayed out and the program stopped.
  
  In addition, the Intellipoint Mouse program keeps asking me (every day, when I start the computer) to insert a disk even though it was not installed from a disk.
  
  These things underscore my perception that this software is full of defects and was developed without much attention to quality.
