Summary: I ran Vista Upgrade Advisor and reassured that my computer was ready for Vista. When installing Vista, I discovered that my version of BIOS is imcompatible with Vista. No BIOS upgrade is available for some Gateway and Toshiba computers. Vista Upgrade Advisor does not check for BIOS incompatility. As a result, Vista could not run, and my boot files were irreversibly damaged. No only do I not have Vista, but I will spend more than 10 hrs. restoring my system.
