The good: Controller-free motion gaming; full-body motion sensor; solid game library at launch; voice control; games will have you very active; almost impossible to fool.
The bad: Timing-based learning curve; menu and video navigation is occasionally wonky and gets old fast; requires a lot of room to play; majority of games require standing; hard-core gamers may not feel satisfied; requires separate power supply when used with older Xbox 360 consoles.
The bottom line: With its impressive body tracking and unique, controller-free experience, Kinect is great for casual gaming parties and workouts--assuming you have enough room to play it.

It wins the whole family over, and is fun for the gamer

Summary: OK So I am a gamer, I have been playing since i got my first gamecub when i was 6, and i already cannot wait for the new releases for the kinect. My family is stealing away my xbox to play it. We have thrown several parties in which it has been a great main event, and the kids, along with the grandparents are in love. The kinect is so amazing this review is lame because i still am having trouble contemplating, and comprehending the degree of excellence of this sensor.

Parent's answer to inactive gamer kids
by Rick_Hunter98 on January 9, 2011
Pros: -Relatively small unit (can easily sit below any flat screen television)
- Requires users to stand and be active during play
- Bundled software (essentially a series of minigames)can be incredibly addicting in multiplayerCons: - Requires sufficient space (Sorry again for hitting you in the face hon!)
- Delay in movement tracking while not horrendous is still noticeable
- Lack of a killer appSummary: At first I was skeptical about purchasing a Kinect, mostly due to the lack of a killer app targeted to the more hardcore gamer. Thankfully though my wife (a non-gamer) ...
Summary: At first I was skeptical about purchasing a Kinect, mostly due to the lack of a killer app targeted to the more hardcore gamer. Thankfully though my wife (a non-gamer) seemed interested enough in one that I opted to pick one up. And it has been so much fun.
The bundled software is a varied series of minigames to introduce users to the Kinect and get them used to moving around. While obviously not targeted to hardcore gamers, it is the multiplayer aspect of these games that really shine.
Of note though is that sufficient room is a must or the sensor will have trouble reading your moves or (as in my case) you can end up slapping someone (like your ever forgiving wife) in the head while playing.
Other titles such as Your Shape and Dance Central are serviceable entries into the launch lineup. Your Shape provides a good selection of yoga and cardio routines that help users work towards individually set goals. For those who don't have time to get to a gym, the Kinect can provide a suitable alternative.
Dance Central seemed to be the standout game of the launch titles. Once again the multiplayer features outshine the single player experience, but that is one of the strong points of the Kinect, its' ability to get people involved.
Overall I am very pleased with the unit, and despite a couple of tracking issues, I would definitely recommend this peripheral for gamers of all levels. -
Amazing technology.
by SupermanWVU on December 31, 2010
Pros: Unlike anything else on the market. Feels like a true step forward and breakthrough.
Cons: Does have some lag, and the lack of titles is annoying. Will be awhile before developers catch up and fully utilize the technology.
Summary: Great technology, is a lot of fun with friends and family. Can't wait to see how developers use the sensor.

Home Theatre Systems BEWARE!!!!!!!!!
by GoogleGamer on December 2, 2010
Pros: I absolutely love to play this with my kids. It keeps me and them active and has been a lot of fun.
Cons: If your Xbox is further than 10FT away the USB cable will not work. I had to buy a $350 long range USB connector so that i could route the cable from my TV to my equipment rack. A longer USB cable will cause all sorts of problems so don't waste the $

Summary: Bottom line is this is a great product, i just wanted to make sure people were aware of the issue with the home theatre. It took me a long time and a lot of research to find a suitable answer to the problem (thanks usbcables.com) and it cost me more than i would have liked to spend but all in all it was worth it. If you have a home theatre system set up and are considering the kinect for it, than I suggest giving usbcable.com a call or at least shoot them an email so they can get you set up properly and without latency issues that are caused by longer USB runs. I also noticed they sell the extender cord (for runs under10 ft) about $35 dollars cheaper than microsoft.

Summary: This is not "The future of human-computer interface." It is a fun toy, and opens new possibilities, but it is not going to change the way we interact with computers. It does not have the speed and precision of a mouse. There is no way to enter text, and saying everything out loud would be tiresome. While I agree it is an interesting concept and may open up new gameplay possibilities, it will not replace the controller for interaction with a console or a keyboard and mouse for interaction with a computer. It is good for certain types of games and is a good addition to the console, but will not define it or change the way games are played forever, as some people are saying. I flatly disagree with other people saying this will replace the controller.

by CAPTAINvSTABBIN on November 28, 2010
Pros: controller free navigation; some games take good advantage of body movements and voice commands;
out of the games i've seen for it,,, i think kinectimals is the best. Fun for every age. easy to set up. kinect video chat with my gf and her kids.Cons: requires alot of space; can seem glitchy in signing in and facial recognition; a bit pricey; not enough games for hardcore gamers;
Summary: Would like to see some support for fps games and kinect. Sometimes kinect is great sometimes not so hot. Depends on the game and developer and space and lighting.
