The good: Controller-free motion gaming; full-body motion sensor; solid game library at launch; voice control; games will have you very active; almost impossible to fool.
The bad: Timing-based learning curve; menu and video navigation is occasionally wonky and gets old fast; requires a lot of room to play; majority of games require standing; hard-core gamers may not feel satisfied; requires separate power supply when used with older Xbox 360 consoles.
The bottom line: With its impressive body tracking and unique, controller-free experience, Kinect is great for casual gaming parties and workouts--assuming you have enough room to play it.

Summary: It could be argued that its expensive. But if we compare the PS move and kinect they are relatively the same price. For the playstation move starter pack and 3 controllers it would cost you more compared to $144.99 of the kinect system.
You can get it for free at: consoles.**************.co.uk/55391
I cant wait for it, im most excited about being able to browse through the xbox dashboard with my hands (weird I know). It should be interesting also to be able to turn the xbox on and off with its built in voice recognition. -

Next Phase in Gaming...

I have 4 year old twins that were able to jump in and play a Kinect game... out of the box with no calibration or setup. There's no controllers or buttons to push, so there's little to no learning curve for them, or anyone else. I also own a Wii and have shuddered at the thought of one of the kids accidentally throwing the Wii remote at the television. With the Kinect, there are no worries and my kids get great exercise even during the Winter months when they can't go outside. -
Awesome Ground-Breaking Technology!!
by sapper6 on November 15, 2010
Pros: No controller needed; you use your body to control the game on the screen.
Very Accurate, a little lag sometimes, but not much.
Very Physical; I was ashamed that after playing Kinect Adventures for 20 minutes I was smoked
Gets you off of your couchCons: Sometimes the motion sensing is inaccurate (I heard it varies from game to game)

Summary: I am so glad that I bought this. I actually sold my old XBOX, and bought the $399 XBOX S-Kinect Bundle. It's a great value because the new XBOX is $299, and the Kinect is $149 (if you can even get the stand alone unit). My girlfriend and I had so much fun playing this together. The included adventures game actually takes pictures of you while you are playing. It's so funny to see how stupid you look while your jumping in the air, or crouching low to play the game. I can't wait to see what the dance game, and sports game is like. If you have kids they will absolutely love this!
The menu command is limited to Kinect hub which allows you to launch a few apps such as ESPN. The voice command works very well. I was impressed with the ability to use the Kinect in lieu of a headset. I fired up Call of Duty Black Ops and was using my Kinect to communicate with the party. I was sitting about 8 feet from the unit and my buddies could hear me perfectly. I also had my TV blaring, and somehow the Kinect's microphone did not communicate that sound to my teammates. It must have a few directional mics.
The video chat quality could be better. I hope Microsoft finds a way to get Skype on board so I can Skype using my Kinect instead of using my computer. One cool thing about the video is that ithe Kinect automatically will follow you around the room. If someone else gets into your picture, it will crop out to include them. It will crop closer on you when the other person leaves the room. I found this truly amazing. One thing I did find out from calling Microsoft is that the Kinect will not move left and right, but it will move up and down. Apparently it has a motor to move up and down but not side to side. They said also not to force the sensor to either move up and down or side to side. It looks like you can turn it to the left and right manually, but they said not to do that. I'll probably spring for the attachment to put it up on my TV.
One thing that is scary is that you always have a camera looking at you. At first I saw that it was always on looking at me whenever my XBOX was on. Let's face it, we don't want to make steamy videos for the government, or some perv who can hack into our XBOX. I found a way to turn the sensor off. If you go to settings, then Kinect Sensor, the first option is to turn the sensor off and on. I leave it off unless I am actually going to use it. I also turn it to face the wall because I am paranoid (lol).
Well if you are looking for a great Holiday gift for someone that already has an XBOX $149 is spent well here. -

An Outstanding Piece of Hardware/Software

Summary: It took me a while to get excited about Kinect, but I have been excited about the technology, since Microsoft announced it. The games released for launch are a mixed bag, with Dance Central being a stellar standout that...the picture perfect vision of what Microsoft is trying to push with regards to hands free gaming. You can even navigate thru the selection of what you want to do...hands-free. Overall, the tech is resident in the Kinect unit, but it will take developers about 6-12 months to get titles out that start to model more after Dance Central's modeling, them some of the others.

Game Changer, but is that really good for XBOX?
by trueedge2097 on November 7, 2010
Pros: Incredible concept. Could be implemented to make an entirely new wave of games.
Cons: LOTS of set-up, LOTS of space, bigger TV needed. Way to cut out the little guy, Microsoft.
A few of the launch titles feel clunky at best. Joy Ride's controls take a LOT of getting used to, and I wonder if kids and families will have the patience.Summary: I really like the idea of more of these devices in the market. Summary: I really like the idea of more of these devices in the market. Competition is good for the marketplace. That's what causes us to strive to make things better. Wii's had decent motion controls (I've NEVER had accuracy issues. PERIOD!) for three years. Now, the other two competitors are in on it. It's really a "we had that three years ago." "But we made it better." "Oh, yeah, well see this." That's what this SHOULD create in gaming: competition to make the products better.
The down side is that something about this seems very unfinished to me. There's a LOT of set-up and calibration involved in the games before the gameplay actually begins. That's going to cut into little Johnny and little Susie's game experience, and will they have the patience for it? A few of the games, like Joy Ride, have clunky controls which are, GASP, a bit unresponsive at times. (Could be my little TV, but still.) I'm hoping these are launch hiccups. Lord knows the Wii had them, and still does in some games.
But will this really convince casual gamers to shell out the extra 300 - 400 dollars for it? I can't say. I'm skeptical. The people who love these kinds of games already own a Wii. They already have it. These are also people who don't necessarily care for better graphics, or better machines, and they REALLY don't like high prices. I have to question whether this will really be a hit.
Finally, XBOX has been highly successful by NOT being the Wii. That's why it sells. It DOESN'T have these cheap, casual games. So is this really a step in the right direction for Microsoft? I know they want to try to break into the Wii's market. But their base may feel betrayed by it. I know I do. What happened to commitment to the best games at the best best value? It was traded so I can dance with Lady Gaga.
And another thing, the Minority Report analogy is AWFUL! Remember, Tom Cruise had to slip on a glove control to make those machines work. He had a controller. This doesn't. Stop using this analogy! -
Awesome fun.. nice games
by nonicks on November 6, 2010
Pros: no brainer; fun to use hands and gestures for controls, family fun, my 3.5 yr old could start playing immediately and am sure will learn asthetics of this play-mode in a day or so..
Cons: new way of playing; needs good coordination amoong players

Summary: it's great new way of playing games. needs coordination and agreement among players when playing multiplayer games i.e.; my 3.5 yr old would keep coming ahead of me when I want to be the player-in-contol. I wished if there was a better way/interface to by-pass such situation. It's easier with Wii (I also own a wii) - because I can choose which controlled is master.
other than that.. its all fun. pur fun, sheer fun.
my family loved Kinect Adventure - rafting game.
will buy Dance Central and Kinectimals soon... -
Kids are refusing to come to dinner...
by mobyrich on November 4, 2010
Pros: OK, not quite that drastic, but they are jumping all over the place having a good time. What in the world would take Microsoft so long to figure out how to make my wife not hate my X-Box?
Cons: Face recognition didn't take on first run through, will try again.
Summary: Great accessory for the money, obviously the future of gaming.. but where is the smellivision?
