The good: Controller-free motion gaming; full-body motion sensor; solid game library at launch; voice control; games will have you very active; almost impossible to fool.
The bad: Timing-based learning curve; menu and video navigation is occasionally wonky and gets old fast; requires a lot of room to play; majority of games require standing; hard-core gamers may not feel satisfied; requires separate power supply when used with older Xbox 360 consoles.
The bottom line: With its impressive body tracking and unique, controller-free experience, Kinect is great for casual gaming parties and workouts--assuming you have enough room to play it.

This thing is amazing, even if it has a learning curve
by indiantechie on November 4, 2010
Pros: The hardware is slim, especially for what thier offering, plus it really is amazing to not be able to need a controller, even if it is only launching it has a really good gaming libary, plus the sensor is 99.9 percent impossible to fool.
Cons: theres more wires for an older xbox console, plus standing is mandatory, the final problem is the fact that you need a decent amount of space to enjoy the games fully, and the final thing is that you have to be more active than the move and the wii

Summary: While it is a monumental gaming experience, it wont be for everyone, i bought one the day it came out, and not having to buy extra controllers, the cons arent really that important one big one is that you have to stand to play the games, whenever i used the move or the wii i stand anyway so that really doesnt matter, one major con is that you will need to be more active than the wii or the move, but i like that because im getting a workout while enjoying a videogame, and the final problem is that you need a preying, that the optty decent amount of space to actually play the game to the full potentional, one thing i couldnt metnion in the cons because i ran out of space is the learning curve while this is nothing new, with the kinect its more time cotrolled than motion controlled, you really have to time you movement on this system no matter wht are you are playing, thats the really only non-solvable con, but theres always a learning curve, so it shouldnt pose too much of a problem, trust me when i say this system is well worth the money, because ther is literally tnothing like it in the gaming world.

The future of human-computer interface

-kids cant get enough of it (me either!)
-gets you off your keister when playing gamesCons: -need a lot of space to play (relative to controller)
-get tired from jumping around
-not a lot of decent titles available
-limited verbal commands

Summary: Kinect is a revolutionary user interface for gaming consoles. I have been following this project for quite some time and am glad it has finally come to fruition. Price point is higher than expected but we purchased the 4gb console bundle (I added a 250gb drive also - for $35), which reduces price to $100 for Kinect. We had to move a piece of furniture out of the way to play with two people, make sure you have 6-8 ft in front of your television to play. I anchored the camera on the top of the tv with industrial velcro - could not put below the television because of my front surround sound speaker. I secured the Wii sensor bar on top of the Kinect - hopefully this will work out OK. A lot of reviews harp on the lack of titles available right now, which is true, but the technology is marvelous in my opinion. Controlling Xbox menus and games with your hands and body is amazing. As Steven Spielberg indicated, this is the future of gaming and he is right. Some games you will always need a controller, but this system definitely opens up some amazing opportunities in the future. It is not a perfect system, but this is the start of a new generation of gaming. You will see this type of system used with PCs in the not to distant future.

Summary: I live in an RV so was not too sure how Kinect would work especially after reading the reviews here about the problems of using in a small space. Can't get much smaller than an RV with immovable furniture. So far it has been great. I have only used the Adventure game that came with it and the exercise one but have not had any problems with space so far. Two people would get a little crowded. I do wish the games would get more real life. I am very happy with this purchase.

Girlfriend was literally laughing out loud.
by Ganymede28211 on November 4, 2010
Pros: Once set up, easy to use. Smart. Tracks well. Fun!
Cons: Long setup. Picky, forced re-setup when moved. A little pricey.
Summary: At $150 ($300, we bought 2) this better redesign my experience. Time will tell if it pays off but I am very interested to get moving in my games.

FALSE ADVERTISING - DOESN'T WORK WITH ORIGINAL XBOX
by djvjgrrl on January 27, 2011
Pros: can't say any good points as i can't get it to work
Cons: EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE PRODUCT AND MICROSOFT'S LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE RESPONSE. I URGE YOU TO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT AS MICROSOFT TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY WHAT SO EVER FOR VERY COMMON TECHNICAL ISSUES KINECT CAUSES.

Summary: WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!!! i bought the kinect last week for myself as a birthday present, opened it last night. hooked it up to my pristine original xbox 360 (used literally about 4 weeks in the last 5 years, stored the rest of the time in original factory box) and popped in a brand new dance central disk. nothing. i thought maybe the disk was flawed, opened and put in a brand new your shape. nothing again. only an open disk signal where the games should be listed.
so then i put in the game i had been playing before i tried to install kinect, oblivion, then fable, then sonic (all xbox 360 games, pre-kinect). they all start and work fine. retried the kinect games, the xbox doesn't recognize they are in the drive. called xbox suppory at 11:00 this morning. 6 hours later, 5 flummoxed tech, 2 supervisors, and NOTHING!!! my xbox is working fine (with xbox disks) the kinect is working (captures my image and movements) BUT THE CONSOLE DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE KINECT GAMES! everyone i spoke with and troubleshooted with at microsoft can't explain the issue - at first they tried to blame my console but after repeatedly playing xbox games they had to admit it was working fine. so it is a compatability issue between xbox and kinect - meaning unless you have a new xbox, the connect doesn't work properly. i'm out money for the games i bought, although i can still return the kinect as i bought it this week. but i am furious at their lack of action - they either need to stop advertising that it works will ALL xboxes or fix the problem (at their own expense) when it doesn't. sure, i can spend $100 to fix my console (which isn't broken), or i can upgrade to a new console (add another $200+) but that is the only solution they will give me. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY - microsoft KNOWS there are issues but isn't interested in fixing them. after searching on the internet today i saw that the bbc has written an article about it, as well as the guardian. not sure why microsoft isn't legally forced to deal with the issue that kinect seems to be destroying and or not working with about 30% of older xboxes, all the while advertising that they do.2 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

I'm Obsessed.
by MadameCupcake on January 23, 2011
Pros: No additional controllers, wires, or crap to worry about. Very responsive and accurate so far. Gets me sweating more than the Wii ever did. SO MUCH FUN.
Cons: Does need a good bit of room, and shouldn't be mounted higher than six feet, which was a bummer since we were thinking to put it on top of our wall-mounted TV.
Summary: I am in love with this thing. We have a 50-inch plasma and a big living room, so really we are ideally situated for this particular system. I can't ...

I can't stop playing, it's very accurate and so much fun, there are so many possibiliities with something like this! It comes with an Adventure game that looks awesome but I haven't tried, we have been playing Dance Central, which is totally addicting and has great dance songs. I can't wait to get some fitness games. LOVE IT!!!

It's a paradigm shift
by adshubert on December 7, 2010
Pros: Interactivity--I could say more but when you *are* the game, it's really all there is.
The hand-wave menus on ESPN and other video applications. So cool.
The voice-recognition menu. It's utterly brilliant.Cons: Would like an even wider game playing field
The jump-in/jump-out feature doesn't work as well if you aren't a familiar figure to the camera
Game availability (though this isn't really a fair criticism since it's new)Summary: The first time you saw someone carrying a mobile phone that wasn't the size of a Sear catalogue, you knew it was the future. The first time you saw ...
Summary: The first time you saw someone carrying a mobile phone that wasn't the size of a Sear catalogue, you knew it was the future. The first time you saw someone checking their e-mail on something called a "Blackberry" that was blue, you knew it was the future. The first time you logged on to the Internet and you saw CNN or National Geographic or searched for information, you knew it was the future. And the first time you use the Kinect, play with it, use it for video and other applications, you know this is the future. Is it perfect yet? Of course not. I'd like it recognize instantaneously when using my hand control as opposed to deciding too quickly that I am not. I'd like it have a bit wider field so I can play in one area and then sit down on my couch and have it still find me. But that's like criticizing an iPhone because the video stream is sometimes a little herky-jerky---as someone once said, folks this is the worst the technology is ever going to be!
I am not a gamer and never have been. The only other system I have owned was a PS1 which I won in a contest. I played it for a while but eventually put it down as it just wasn't for me to sit down and play games for hours, no matter how fun it seemed. However with an active 8 year-old son combined with the fun we've had playing other peoples Wiis, I decided to get one and take advantage of the nice pricing. However, just hours away from my Wii purchased I began noticing advertising for the Kinect. I poked around online, saw all the demos, noticed the price point wasn't too steep over the Wii (an extra $100), and decided to give it a go, purchasing from Best Buy because of their excellent return policy. If I didn't like it, I'd bring it back and get the Wii which I know I'll like. Well, this is not going back, ever. It's a gamechanger. You will wonder why you should ever hold a controller again. You will demand that more games come out immediately. You will insist that the NFL, MLB, NASCAR, and every shoot-em-up you've ever played to come out with a Kinect version instantly. You will get happily exhausted playing games, you will lose weight, you will have more fun playing a game than you have ever had. And if you do get tired and want a break and still want to play games, well, it's still an XBox so put in your favorite controller game and sit back for a while.
But believe me when I say, Believe the Hype. It is the future and we get to play it now.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.

High requirements, overpriced, and laggy.
by jleack on November 21, 2010

- Spacial requirements are out of hand.

Summary: The problem with Kinect is that without a button, direct input isn't possible. Games like Gears of War 2, Halo, and Fable are what define the console for me, and to not be able to play these with a $150 peripheral in any way is a huge waste. The games the Kinect does have, and has been announced to have for the next year, are all mindless and are as simple and standing still while moving the arms and legs in certain ways. The lag is really a problem, and at times it feels like you have to adapt to understanding how to do motions before they are needed to make up for it.
This device completely fails to target the market of the Xbox 360, and I think Microsoft did a horrible job of recognizing that. I do not recommend this device to anyone, and once the price is under $100, I can recommend it to families with young children, but nothing else.1 out of 1 users found this user opinion helpful.
