Awesome for PC simmers looking for a good console sim.
by jayman25 on December 9, 2011
Pros: Controllability of helicopter is very good considering that this is not a PC platform. The weapons systems aren't complicated but not simple. It allows for user customization on how to engage a target.
Cons: The mission objectives are not extremely clear. I would not call gameplay mundane but it does become repetitive over time.
Summary: This game stands above the rest for the hardcore simmer. Yet is easily manageable for regular gamers with a little practice. The only other console sim that comes close is ...
Summary: This game stands above the rest for the hardcore simmer. Yet is easily manageable for regular gamers with a little practice. The only other console sim that comes close is Over G 6. I can't stand the arcadic style that are out there such as AC 6, HAWX, or the new JANES fighter game. Rack up some kills with the Apache, you will not regret it!
Looks promissing, sucks you in, spits you out

Pros: Beginners friendly, action packed gameplay, great visuals and sound, 3 completly different enviroments, nice variety of missions, complex but easy to learn controlls
Cons: some really frustrating/unbalanced missions, mostly useless AI gunner, gameplay gets redundant pretty fast

Summary: Personally I've been waiting for this game for years ... at least i thought so. It's indeed fun to watch tanks getting hit by Hellfires while you're head rotates in the beautyful, detailed cockpit or blasting infantry in the FLIR with the 30mm cannon but it comes as a price as usuall.
The gameplay is very much like HAWX or Ace Combat. Get to point A and blow stuff up then proceed to point B and do the same. And there is nothing wrong with this in generall but it gets really redundand because of the lack of variety in taktics you're gonna apply.
Everyone who knows the Longbow whould try to find cover, acquire targets, engage and take cover again. But that's not how it works. Basicly you're dogfighting like in HAWX but with ground forces instead of enemy planes. One could engage from a distance but missiles are limited to 8 and after that you get 3 minutes reloadtime (on "Veteran" you need to land to reload all your weapons). In this time you're limited to unguidet rockets and your cannon.
Rockets are limited to 38 but at least they reload in a couple of seconds. With a bit of practice a volley of those means instant death to your enemys. The gun on the other hand is virtually useless. It's controlled by your gunner who will engage automaticly if you provide him with a stable platform. But most of the time he engages those targets most difficult to hit instead of targets in front of you ... if he engages anything at all. So better master firing rockets fast! It would have been nice if you could tell your co-pilot to engage a specific target.
Acquiring targets also isn't that easy. If you want to lock on a specific target for your hellfires you got to cycle through all of them untill you get the one you wanted. This is especially annoying if you try to target airdefences first but lock on only low priority targets like jeeps and trucks all the time.
The FLIR is a nice feature which lets you take control of the 30mm chaingun to pick of infantry and light armored vehicles or manually aim hellfires at groups of infantry or tanks (which won't work at certain distances even though you'd expect it to). Just tell your helo to hover and it's weapons free. Only problem with that is that you will constantly taking damage from incoming fire even 3km away from your targets and through covering trees. After 20 to 30 seconds you're either heavily damaged or allready going down. You could switch to the FLIR while flying but it's quiet risky as you got no flightcontrol while in FLIR mode. It would have helped if you could at least adjust the altitude to evade while hovering just a bit but this way it requires you to go to the pilots seat, adjust altitute and switch back to FLIR.
Only at one mission the FLIR really gets handy when you cover ground forces like in COD:MW and nobody is paying attention to you. At least the local coop should get rid of that as a friend can take control of the gun while you fly or vice versa.
The missions' overall design is good though. There is a great variety of objectives and the different enviroments really contribute to this. In one mission you're patroling a mountain pass, in another one guarding friendly forces and destroying bridges to slow down enemy forces converging on their location. You shouldn't get bored too soon in terms of mission objectives.
But some missions are just unbelievable hard and frustrating especially those where you have to defend static targets as enemy forces suddenly pop up everywhere. You wish you could just do it like an AC130 gunship with you're chaingun but that would get you killed in a matter of seconds and you only get 8 hellfires every 3 minutes so you really need to be quick and hardcore in using those unguided rockets when you got this far.
The last few missions are just insane. By now you should have mastered all your weapons except your Stinger air-to-air missiles which you had to use only every now and then. But now you're supposed to use them perfectly to engage a bunch of enemy helos which literally spam missiles at you nonstop.
You only get 4 stingers every 3 minutes, you got to constantly evade incoming missiles and the worst thing is most Stingers will miss their target if you haven't mastered using them allready. And once if you managed this you're supposed to shoot down one more helo in about 20 seconds (or it's mission failed) which is nearly impossible if you got no stingers left.
The Apache was designed for engaging tanks but not dogfighting helos. Those missions are just completly out of place and were probably only made to increase the difficulty unnecessarily.
At first it really looks, plays and feels just as you imagine flying an Apache on you're console but the unbalanced missions and stupid AI will make you want to destroy it with a Hellfire every now and then. My hope is that Gaijin will alter the gameplay in future DLC or I will just stick to my PC and play some real simulations even though the are not next gen.
