Great graphics and, but mushy controls and BORING play
by Rob459 on November 10, 2010
Pros: The graphics definitely show improvements in motion capture. Everything looks great. Also, I love the story line of a black ops operator during the Cold War.
Cons: The controls just don't feel as snappy as the earlier COD offerings. The weapons especially seem bland in the way they feel when fired. Worst of all though, the game play in the campaign mode is downright boring. Far too scripted.

Summary: Overall I'm disappointed with the game. While the graphics and the story line are both great, the controls just didn't feel as quick and snappy as earlier COD games. It was like going from a finely-tuned sports car that almost anticipates your moves to some lumbering SUV that takes a second to respond. Even worse for me though is the highly scripted campaign mode that was much more like one of the Bad Company games than COD. Always following another character and simply being told which button to push at various stops was just lame. Just give me an objective and let me figure out how to achieve it, don't do all the interesting stuff for me and use me as just some sort of prompt-activated button pusher.
I just don't understand why game makers think that something running on rails like a silly Disneyland ride is going to appeal to people looking for something closer to a realistic simulation. I always suspect that they get so protective of the story that they think they need to lead you through it by the nose so that you don't mess up their so perfectly planned story line. But in doing so they completely ruin the experience for the player. It's like having someone try to teach you how to do something, but then constantly stepping in and doing it themselves whenever you start to feel like you're just about to get it. They need to understand that their role is not to control the game play, but to facilitate it.
I was really looking forward to this game. I love the COD franchise. But this game was a huge let-down. The campaign mode is more like a movie in which you are periodically asked to push a button periodically to move the story along than anything resembling an actual game. And you're not even given a choice as to which button to push. I'd personally much rather go back and play COD4 over for the thousandth time than play this through even once. I seriously hope this title is not an indication of what we can expect from the COD franchise in the future. If it is, I'm going to go dust off my original Playstation. At least some of those games were fun.3 out of 3 users found this user opinion helpful.

Summary: The call of duty series is supposed to be great, to be outstanding, although infinity ward does a good job of keeping things fresh, adding new content and surprising the gamer with new things, Activision has only dissapointed me on what level they are on compared to infinity ward. in campaign all it is, is action, no unique things like the title "black ops" would seem like, I was expecting a covert op game but instead I bought a game with total action and a boringness to it. The multiplayer has gotten even crappier, they took out lot's of perks and changed names of some and didn't add any. They have barely any guns in the game compared to modern warfare 2 and not many upgrades to your guns. the graphics suck also, they have a cartoony feel. This game sucks, don't buy it. I wish I hadn't

AWFUL GAME. TREYARCH SUCKS. TERRIBLE GRAPHICS.
by PMillz18 on April 16, 2013
Pros: None that can really come to mind, a DISGRACE TO THE CALL OF DUTY FRANCHISE!!!!!!
Cons: THERE IS NO GOOD IN THIS GAME. The campaign had a terrible story line, the multiplayer is nothing but a lack luster repeat of WaW (which was also terrible) Over powered guns make it very boring and awful servers.
Summary: I do not recommend buying it just because it says Call of Duty on the cover... Save yourself some money and buy Mw2 Or Bo2 they are better than this ...

Pros: This game is great with online mode and campaign mode also with the highly anticipated ZOMBIES which most people wanted in the last game..The story to the game is really interesting to some might be a little confusing and the Zombies must i say more it is
Cons: Game does not have bad graphics but a little cartoonish and i know they tried to capture the motions but i am all about graphics and i love zombies and wish they could offer more maps and offer more maps in the map packs also..And one other thing is that
Summary: Great game just wanted a little more since it is one of the best game of all time and i highly recommend this game and looking forward to the next ...

No more little kids with noob tubes and lightweight marathon. They have hit the nail on the head with this game making a fun, exciting , better call of duty then ever before.

Best Call of Duty Yet!
by sapper6 on November 14, 2010
Pros: New modes in online play
New monetary system to purchase upgrades, and customizations
Faster more fluid gameplay
Best campaign in any FPS game ever
Zombies!!!Cons: Some of the stuff we have seen returns again (weapons, perks)
No co-op campaign mode as of yet
Spawning system is better but still frustrating (spawns you in front of enemies, and vice-versa)
Knifing is still really cheapSummary: Gameplay (especially online) is faster and more fluid. I see people complaining about "cartoonish" graphics, but I think this is the best looking call of duty yet. Tons of different ...
Summary: Gameplay (especially online) is faster and more fluid. I see people complaining about "cartoonish" graphics, but I think this is the best looking call of duty yet. Tons of different multiplayer modes, and an awesome campaign combine to make this the best shooter of the year. I got this game at release and didn't put the controller down for three days (loser). I have played all of the Call of Duty(s) since call of duty 2. This is my favorite. There are a lot of similarities with MW2, but they did tweak a few things. There is an ability to wager money which is used to buy upgrades like equipment and weapons, and things to customize your player card, and weapon.
Campaign mode is awesome and has a lot of originality. The middle east, WW2 era is so played out. It's great to see a new era (cold war).
Zombies is back and awesome as ever; beat the campaign once to get a special zombie mode.
Overall I think this is the best Call of Duty ever. A definite must have for any fan of first person shooters. -

The first couple levels had me really disappointed in the game and had me questioning whether I had just wasted 60 bucks. But after those first few levels, things have opened up a bit and I am enjoying the experience much better.
I know this a liner shooter; I love liner shooters. I expect and want single paths and scripted set piece events. If you expect open world, sandbox type game play, I?ve picked up the wrong game. However, the levels in general feel a bit too constricted, narrow and even claustrophobic at times. Objectives, or what you are expected to do next, are not always as clear as they should be. This is not helped by the pacing, which to a call it break neck, would be an understatement. The transition between one action sequence and the next within a level can, at times, be jarring and unrealistic. As a result, while the story line is an interesting one, that sense of immersion I?ve gotten with similar games in this genre is lacking with this game. Overall, the campaign is an enjoyable ride, even if a bumping and uneven one.
I have no complaints with controls?walk, run, look, aim, shot?typical shooter stuff.
Online Multiplayer
I know this where the real beard and butter is for this game. However, I am one of those strange, shunned, and misunderstood gamers who doesn?t like online shooters (at least consoles). As a result, I really don?t have anything to add on this all important front.
Combat Training
Now we?re talking. The Combat Training mode is a great value added component for someone (like me) who wants to enjoy and experience a taste of Multiplayer without the frustration and pain often associated with trips to the cyber battlefield. Split screen Team Deathmatch with my son is proving to be a nice and welcome unofficial co-op experience. Admittedly, It?s a poor substitute for a real co-op mode (Resistance or WoW) or the wonderful spec-ops mode of MW2, but it?s better than nothing. And who knows, maybe this will act as a gateway to future online play.
Overall, I feel Black Ops is decent and solid enough game. If you?re an open-minded fan of the FPS genre, I have no reason to think you won?t enjoy this game. There is nothing practically ground breaking or earth scattering with this game. It?s not "blow you away" awesome, which I believe was the general (over) expectation for this game. However, the overly negative reviews by some, seem to be over the top and detected from any sense of reality or perspective.
