Summary: I’ll be the first one to admit that I reserved this game based on the Halo 3 Beta offer, but, I played the demo and was intrigued. Boy, am I glad I took the risk.
I’ve never been a big fan of “sandbox” games, although I got a huge kick out of the Spider-man 2 and True Crime: Streets of LA games for the original Xbox. Crackdown delivers in the way both of those games did: Your character is set in a huge environment, with multitudes of ways to interact with and explore it. Crackdown takes this basic formula and runs with it, Jesse Owens-style.
Crackdown’s gameplay is addictive because you constantly have the opportunity to upgrade your already impressive abilities in the fields of agility (speed and jumping height), driving, explosive power, firearms, and strength. Collecting Agility and Secret Orbs, in addition to dispatching randos in specific (power-inducing) ways, makes the storyline itself seem entirely secondary. Unfortunately, that statement is true – the story never gets off the ground. You never get to know any character beyond the dossier files that rudely interrupt your game whenever you are near a new target, including yourself.
I played less than five hours and am a third of the way through the game, making a short campaign imminent. But, who cares?! With gameplay like this (where I can roam the entire world freely and upgrade for hours without completing a single objective), who needs missions?! Promised downloadable expansions promise to bring more depth to the campaign, but I really don’t care. The stellar gameplay stands alone well enough. I hope the ride lasts.
Updated
I stand corrected - I have maxed out most of my abilities, and the latter two gangs are presenting a major challenge! This only adds to the value of the game!
